360fit Blog – You Need To Give Up

Posted on January 25, 2016

The other day a client told me she just couldn’t give up ice cream at night. “I just can’t do it… and I don’t think I should have to.” She said.

My biggest pet peeve is when people don’t want to give things up, but they want major changes in their bodies. This lady is the same as those who tell me all the time how they want six pack abs, but won’t give up sugar in their five coffees a day. Something isn’t lining up here.

People love telling me their fitness goals, and then follow it up saying they don’t want to change things, and that “life’s too short” to not enjoy the things they want. Or they say, “I want a life!”

This is exactly the same as saying, I’m not saving for my retirement because life is too short and I want to spend all my money now. Or saying I’m not saving some money for my rent, I’m just going to spend it all because life is too short to worry about rent. And I’m sure everyone would agree those are crazy comments.

Everything in life is about giving up one thing, so you can do something else.

If you get in a relationship you technically are giving up dating other people so you can date just one. But you don’t think of it that way. You think, this person is amazing I want to just be with them. But really you are giving up dating other people.

Fitness is no different! Don’t fall in the trap of feeling like you shouldn’t  change your habits but  still  get results. Results come from making changes! You need to commit to your goal, just like you would in a relationship; and that means giving up things.

When you do the changes you want will come quickly!

360fit Blog – Goodlife the Puppy Mill of Gyms

Posted on November 16, 2015

Goodlife Fitness is the puppy mill of fitness in Canada.

They have lots of pretty machines and weights. You look around and think, heck I could get fit in a place like this!

They also have some of the worst trainers around, and over 80 percent of their members never come to the gym at all, let alone get fit.

There’s a reason Goodlife Fitness hires and keeps bad trainers. It’s all economic.

You see Goodlife Fitness hires kids most of the time. They have zero experience, only a weekend course, and no real understanding of fitness and how to work with clients.

But those kids make Goodlife millions of dollars a year.

You see, better trainers command higher wages. This means the company makes less on those trainers. So it’s in Goodlife’s best interest to hire and keep young and inexperienced trainers. Those trainers are fed clients who walk in the door, wanting to get fit. They pay Goodlife thousands of dollars for an expert. What they get is a novice, who likely knows only a fraction more than the client does.

The client works with the trainer for a long time and doesn’t progress, because the trainer doesn’t know how to help them. Usually then the client quits and says, personal trainers are waste of time money.

The fact is there are lots of very good trainers. Just very few of them work at Goodlife Fitness. They work at smaller gyms that care about their clients. These trainer get results, help people every day, and are worth every penny you pay for them.

If you want to get fit, skip Goodlife and the other big chains, and look for a smaller gym with better trainers. You will actually get something good for the money you put down and be much happier with the results.

360fit Blog Favorite Breakfast by Devin Sherrington

Posted on April 9, 2014

I am asked all the time what I eat, and the meal I am asked about the most is breakfast.

People have a terrible time eating breakfast. I used to wonder about why people skipped it so much. When I get up I’m hungry and there’s no way I’m skipping it!

Then a client explained it perfectly. She said she skipped it because it took too long and she didn’t want to get up five minutes earlier to make it. Makes sense I guess.

I have a way to have fast breakfast that tastes good and is good for you too. It goes like this.

1. Make oatmeal. Not sugar filled oatmeal, real oatmeal.
2. Add extra water to make it a little soupy after it is cooked. (This is important and if you skip this step you will not be happy with the end result.)
3. Add protein power.
4. Add frozen fruit. I like blueberries and apples but it’s up to you.
5. Eat.

This is a simple and very quick breakfast. It has healthy carbs, protein, and will keep you feeling full for a while.

I’ve eaten almost every morning for about 15 years and I look forward to it every day! If you want some changes use different fruit of a different kind of protein powder. That way you get a whole different meal, though to be honest it could be the same every day for me.

Give this a try. You will be impressed with the result!

360fit Blog The 20 Min Workout by Devin Sherrington

Posted on April 8, 2014

With yesterday being the first nice day of 2014 I was dying to go outside and workout. It’s been a long winter and I wanted to be in the sun, exercising.

The problem is I only had about 30 minutes as I had a client coming and I needed to jam a shower in that 30 min as well. Now I know trainers who would say I didn’t have enough time to get a good workout in. I disagree.

I flipped a 180 lbs tractor tire for 15 min went inside, had a shower and went on with my day.

I’m not saying you need to be out flipping tractor tires in you spare time. But I do feel you can work really hard for 15-20 min and get a workout in when you are short on time.

Try this workout next time you are short on time.

Pushups 10 reps
Squats 20 reps
Crunches 20 reps
High knee run in place 30sec
1 min break

Do that as many times as you can in 15-20 min. It doesn’t look like it would be tough but it will leave you sweaty and give you a great workout in a short time!

Bottom line here is that doing something is always better than doing nothing! So go do a short workout. You will be happy you did it.

360fit – Find Your Fitness Why

Posted on September 18, 2013

What’s your fitness why? That’s the question you need an answer to if you want to be successful in your health and fitness goals.

Your why is the main reason you want something. It doesn’t have to be an amazing or earth shattering why. In fact some of the simpler whys are some of the best.

When I started working out I was 14 years old. My brother had a weight bench which he gotten for Christmas and I wanted to be like my big brother Thane. It really was that simple. I felt he was cool I and wanted to be cool too.

Over time the why changed for me as it will for you. My why became about sports and girls. I liked sports and I loved girls, even though I was super shy and didn’t kiss a girl until I was 17. My why had evolved to something different than just trying to impress my older brother and emulate him.

Now that I’m older my why has changed again. Now I workout because I love the feeling of being able to do anything physically I want to do outside the gym. If I want to run, I can run. If I want to hike, or climb trees or carry my kids now that they are big, I can do those things. For me, it gives me a sense of power and confidence that I can do those things.

Now none of those reason are earth changers! Heck when I read them now they seem fairly shallow to me. But those are my whys, so as long as they mean something to me, that’s all that matters!

Think about what your why is. What is the reason you want to be fit? Is it because it makes you feel stronger, you want to live longer, you want to look better, or you just think it would be cool.

Remember there are no bad whys. They just are whys. And as long as it means something to you, that is what matters.

Spend some time thinking about what your whys are. Write them down and put them in order of most important. Then move forward on your fitness journey, keeping your why firmly in your mind.
