There is a lot of turn over in the fitness industry. Many people want to be trainers, go get certified, start strong and then burn out. Suddenly they are doing a different job, unhappy with their experience in fitness.
Why is turn over so high in fitness?
It’s actually fairly simple and boils down to three main things.
- Trainers need to make fitness fun, and you need to be upbeat all the time. You can’t have a bad day. You can’t sulk in your office for the day. You are on display all day long.
- Trainers work when other people don’t work. That means they tend to work early mornings and at night. That’s when most people are off work and can see you. This means you have time off during the day, but also means split shifts.
- You give a lot of energy to clients all day long. Clients need support, encouragement and constant positive comments. You need to give energy all day long with no holding back.
These might sound like hard things to do and no fun, but actually they are good things! The one thing I can tell you is no matter how bad a mood you are in, if you act positive and happy for 15 minutes you will feel way better, so having to act happy for clients makes you feel happy!
Working when other people don’t means often trainers get the afternoons off which in my mind is awesome. Its great when you have a beautiful summer day and you have a few hours to enjoy it. 🙂
Last, if when you give energy to people, they return it. They get excited and are excited to work with you. In other words giving energy, means you get more energy back. I can tell you I hardly ever feel tired at work because clients fuel my energy as I fuel theirs!
While being a personal trainer might not be for everyone, it is an amazing job and a lot of fun. Your trainer should be enjoying it and love what they do for a living! If they don’t try another trainer.
