360fit Blog – Don’t Waste Your Time

Posted on December 30, 2015

I hate wasting time. It could be because I have ADHD and I always want to be moving and doing something. I really have a terrible time sitting still. But what frustrates me the most about wasting time, is people wasting their time exercising!

I love when people exercise! I believe, passionately, that the way to lower health care costs, and better quality of life for everyone in Canada, is fitness. Exercise not only makes you feel better physically, but totally changes your mood and outlook on life. I went through a divorce, and I can tell you I wouldn’t have gotten through it without exercise!

It kills me to see so many people flocking to fitness centers and gyms this time of year and wasting their time!

The reason they waste time is because they really don’t know what to do, and that’s totally normal. If I showed up at your job tomorrow and tried to do what you do, I would fail miserably. It’s not rocket science. I wouldn’t know what the heck I was doing, and that’s the reason so many people waste their time at the gym. They don’t know what to do.

Look everyone wants to be more fit. I don’t think you could find one person who says, I’d like to be less fit this year! But the facts are, you are going to waste a lot of time if you don’t know what you are doing.

I know trainers are expensive, and many people don’t want to pay. I hear you. But when something clogs your toilet you call a plumber right? When your car breaks down, you take it to a mechanic. A personal trainer is no different.

Will it cost you some money? Yep it will. But lets be honest for a second. When you get no results are you going to keep going or will you just stop going to the gym? Then you are basically donating to the gym and getting absolutely nothing in return.

Do yourself a favor and get some help. We work with every budget, no matter what it is! We will figure out a way for you to get fit and healthy.

360fit Blog – Think You’re Special? You’re Not!

Posted on December 28, 2015

You’re not special. Neither am I. No one is… and that’s actually really cool!

There’s a feeling we have all had, that everyone else has it easier than we do. We see it on Facebook and Instagram. Everyone has a great life. Everyone is traveling and everyone is having a blast.

When it comes to fitness we think other people have it easier. We say, well they are just good at it, or they don’t like junk food. The problem with this argument is that it is completely wrong.

The thing that always amazes me about fitness is the commonality of all people. Across all people when it comes to fitness, we all have exactly the same struggles. The fact is we all battle the same things every day, just in different ways. Some hate working out. Some hate eating healthy. Some hate both.

Now lots of people I’m sure look at me and say, well it’s easy for you. You’re fit. You like healthy food. You own a gym. It’s a joke for you and you can’t understand what I’m going through!

There have been many times I’m working out in a class and I look around and think, everyone is killing this, why is it so freaking hard for me?! I feel like I’m struggling and everyone else is cruising.

But every single time when it’s over and I voice how hard I found it, everyone else agrees. Those are the moments that I know we are all the same and we all struggle with health and fitness.

No one is perfect. It’s never easy every day. There’s always a struggle.

So next time you feel down, or are having a hard time, remember everyone has the same feelings. Draw strength from the fact we are all in this together, and everyone knows exactly how you feel.

We have all been there before and that’s what we do at 360fit! We are here to help you battle through and help you keep going when you don’t want to!

360fit Blog – I Don’t Want To Workout Today

Posted on December 23, 2015

I’ll let you in on a secret about me… I don’t always want to workout.

I know it shouldn’t be like that. I own a gym for God’s sake! I train people for a living. I should love everything and anything about health and fitness right?

Well, yes that’s all true. I do love exercise and working out. I love the feeling of being sweaty and breathing hard. I love the feeling of finishing a hard workout.

But some days I just don’t feel like it.

On those days I usually have lots of things going on, or my mind is somewhere else. I just feel like saying, I have to skip today… I’ll do it tomorrow.

And those are the days I grit my teeth and say, not today!

Look here’s the facts, fitness is hard. Eating healthy is hard. It’s giving things up. It’s not a walk in the park, and it’s hard for every single person who does it.

But the secret, is to just go do it. When you feel down and don’t want to workout, go anyway. When you feel like sleeping in, just get the heck up. When you are working out and feel like it just isn’t flowing, remember you are miles ahead of the other version of yourself who stayed home!

Health and fitness is about grinding every, single, day. It’s about putting in time. That’s how you get fit, by not skipping. You get fit by putting in time when you don’t feel like it.

Anyone can exercise and eat well on days they feel like it. What separates the people who are successful, from the rest, is the successful ones do it no matter what; whether they feel like it or not!

Next time you feel like taking a mental health day, take it at the gym. You will be happy you did it!

360fit Blog – @#$% Easy

Posted on December 15, 2015

I’ve never pressed the snooze button, not once, ever. I don’t believe in it. It’s not that I always hop out of bed full of energy. I do it because I don’t believe in easy.

Nothing worth having comes easy!

In no place is this more true than in fitness. To be fit and healthy it takes time, and hard work. It doesn’t happen overnight, but the payoff is well worth it.

There’s an old saying that says “Nothing tastes as good as fit feels.” I completely believe in this.

Maybe you have some junk food you love. Maybe you don’t like the idea of giving anything up. Maybe you don’t like to sweat and don’t like hard work. That could all be true… but I challenge anyone who thinks this, to try fitness for three months.

You will completely change your mind in that short time! You don’t know how great you can feel, I promise you.

You have the time!

You can do it!

You don’t have to wait until you are fitter, or lose some weight!

There is no better time to begin getting fit than right this very moment!

Do it for yourself. Do it for your children, your spouse, your parents, your friends… No matter what just do it! In three months you will happy you did it.

360fit Blog – Changes Coming to 360fit

Posted on December 14, 2015

I’m super exited to announce new changes to 360fit all of which were requested by our amazing members and clients!

Beginning January 2016 we will be offering a Sunday morning Bootcamp at 9 am, so now you can come to 360fit seven days a week!

We also have been working hard to make our fitness classes even better, and will be streamlining our classes so there are only three types. Those three types will be Bootcamp, Tabata and Superhero Training.

The reason we are making changes is simple; these are the classes our members like the most, and we want to do our best possible work to make sure you get the best experience possible.

We will also be a looking at times of classes to see if there are better times to offer, and what works best for our members. The new schedule will be unveiled at the end of December so look out for it!

For now no changes will happen with the schedule so don’t worry we won’t be taking away your times. I’m very excited for the new year and serving our members and clients even better!

360fit Blog – My Fitness Baby

Posted on December 11, 2015

There was a time, not too long ago, I was a one man army. I did all my bootcamps and personal training myself. The only person I had to keep an eye on was me. The only thing I needed to worry about was my clients.

These days things are a lot different! I own a gym and I have trainers who work with me, and an office manager who runs operations of the gym. It’s completely different than things were a few years ago, when I rented out gyms myself.

I have been very lucky with the trainers and staff I have! Not only have they been positive, upbeat and pleasant people, but they all bring extra ideas and plans I never would have thought of on my own!

I wanted to take a moment and say how appreciative I am of the staff I have and have had over the years at 360fit. They have kept things fresh for me, made my days enjoyable and challenged me to be a better trainer. I wish all of them were still working with me!

To Peter, Tanya, Liz, Georgie, Thomas, Guy, Emily, Amanda, Trinity, Peter, Kaley, Marion, Pat, Jason, Ben, Zach, Cindy, Julie, Jordan, Arlene, Leslie, Courteney, Tanya R, Jason, and anyone I’m forgetting (man there has been so many) I want to say thanks for making my job so much fun! You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for pouring your hearts into my baby and helping me grow my vision into a reality!

360fit Blog – This Xmas Keep Fitness Money Local

Posted on December 8, 2015

December and January are the big months in fitness. Everyone is making resolutions to get fit, and change their lives. This year I encourage you to spend your money on local gyms, and not just because I own one!

Now I’m a little biased, as I feel 360fit offers some of the best options around, but  I would suggest before you look to a national chain for your fitness, check out some of these amazing businesses.

In Dartmouth gyms like 3rd Degree Fitness, Blended Athletics, Revolution Fitness, 360fit and Core Essentials all have great service and very different programs. There is something for everyone.

In Bedford, ProEdge offers sports specific training, while if you are looking for Crossfit, check out Rocky Lake Crossfit or Crossift Exertion. My friend Ryan Staples owns Manimal in Sackville which offers some excellent fitness options.

In Halifax, Evolve Fitness owned by Matt and Mitch Benvie are bootcamp experts, while Crossift Ironstone, Crossfit Kinetics and Crossfit OnSide offer Crossfit for any area. Push Fitness and FitnessFX are some others to definitely check out.

No matter where you decide to spend your fitness dollars, the one thing I ask is please keep it local! All these great small gyms are owned and operated by local people, who keep your dollars in the local economy.

360fit Blog – You’ve Been Lied To

Posted on December 7, 2015

I’ve got some bad news for you. I know you have been told many times there’s a magic pill, or workout, for fitness. There isn’t. You’ve been sold a lie.

Every supplement company in the world (and many fitness companies who know better) have pitched out the “perfect” “easy” “simple” way to get fit. They show amazing before and after pictures. They claim just pay them and you can do this too.

It kills me to see the field I love so much, be perverted by companies who prey on people’s goals, and try to sell them garbage and junk. I’m sure I could make a hell of a lot more money if I did that, but I believe in the truth, and doing what is right for clients.

Many years ago I did a workout and diet program in my first year of university at Acadia. It promised to make me look like a bodybuilder, and had me sold.

It was one of the stupidest things I’ve ever tried. It didn’t work and was a waste of time and money. I learned my lesson right then!

Everyone from some Crossfits, to the 21 Day Fix, to Beachbody and Isagentixs will promise to change your life. They offer workouts that only they can do. They offer pills and supplements you can get no other place.

They are completely full of crap.

I’ve been a trainer for 22 years. If there were quick fixes, I would have come across them by now. Hell if there was one, I would have invented it and gotten super rich!

There is only one way to get fit; grind.

When I say grind I mean workout at least four to five times a week, week in week out. No skipping workouts because you are tired. No eating junk food because today is Monday, and you feel you are owed. It means giving up things to have the fitness level you want.

The good news is when you work at it; you can completely change your body and life! Yes it will be hard, and yes you will give up some things. But like the old saying goes, “Nothing tastes as good as fit feels!” That’s the truth!

At 360fit our mandate is to give you honest info, and the best workouts you’ve had. We can help you reach any goal you set. We won’t lie to you about it, and we won’t sell you quick fixes. We are in it for the long haul.

360fit Blog – The Scale Will Ruin Your Life

Posted on November 30, 2015

My ex used to get on the scale every morning. I mean every… single… morning.

Whatever the scale read decided how she felt about herself for the rest of the day. As messed up as that is, she’s not alone. Many people do this.

Here’s the 411 about the scale; it’s just a tool that tells you a little piece of info. It doesn’t tell you how fit you are, and it sure as hell doesn’t tell you if you are getting in better shape.

All it does is say  what you weigh.

Let me tell you a story; I had a client come to me a few years ago. She had already lost about 40 lbs. She weighed about 165 lbs, and needed to get fit now that she was lighter, as she had done the whole weight loss with diet.

Flash forward one year later and she was only 10 lbs lighter than when she came to see me the first time. If she had only been interested in the scale, and used that only as a measure of her success she would have undoubtedly said, what a waste of money.

But she didn’t do that for a simple reason; She had also come down eight clothing sizes in that year and lost over 30 inches from her body. She looked like a million bucks!

The scale lied to her. She was gaining muscle and losing fat the whole time, so that little bit of weight loss, was actually a huge difference in body compensation. She lost fat and gained muscle. She was much smaller.

What I say to all clients who say they want to be a certain weight is this; If you weighed what you weigh right now, but looked exactly the way you want look, would you be OK with that?

Of course the answer is always yes. Even if you say you want to be a certain weight, really what you want is to look a certain way.

This is why you can’t count on the scale. It will only tell you weight. It doesn’t tell you fitness.

So get the heck off that darn scale and don’t let it run your life!

360fit Blog – Political Correctness Gone Wrong

Posted on November 25, 2015

Today I heard one of the most stupidest things I’ve heard in a while. The University of Ottawa just cancelled a free Yoga class because someone complained it was stealing their culture. The issue is the teacher is white.

Little background; Yoga teacher Jen Scharf has been teaching a free yoga class for seven years. It’s for people with disabilities but is open to anyone. She gives up her time to help, and expects nothing back.

But following a single complaint the University of Ottawa cancelled the free yoga she was teaching. Apparently the concern for University of Ottawa is that culture was being stolen. Their thinking is only someone from India can teach Yoga.

This is a situation where political correctness is completely out of control. By this argument, no one who is not from a certain culture can possibly teach, or know, anything from that culture. It is saying that a Yoga teacher cannot teach Yoga if she is not from India.

I’m going to hazard a guess and say that just because you are from India, doesn’t make you a good Yoga teacher, or even a Yoga teacher at all. To assume that someone only can teach Yoga if they are from India, is the same as saying only someone from North America could teach American literature, or only someone from England can teach Shakespeare.

Here’s a quick thought for those political correct nuts at University of Ottawa… There’s an old saying that says imitation is the biggest form of flattery. You have someone who is giving up their time to help! They are asking for nothing in return, and because of a blind faith in political correctness, the university cancels the whole thing.

Who cares about the people who now lose their Yoga teacher right? As long as that one single person who complained is happy, nothing else matters.

There’s a time and place for political correctness, but it wasn’t created so single people can ruin things for the masses. Come on University of Ottawa, make the right choice here. This is crazy!
