Article: Change is Good
The Daily News - Fit to Be Tried by Devin Sherrington
Trying new exercises and routines is key to a healthy body. Whether you are just starting, or have been working out for years, it's important to keep things fresh.
Some days you don't feel like training. Just like some days you don't feeling like going to work -- it's normal.
Fortunately there are ways to jumpstart a workout. Remember what made you fall in love with working out in the first place. It was the change you made in your life, by adding exercise. So maybe it's time to change things again.
If you've always worked out alone, try budding up. It doesn't have to be your best friend. Someone who has the same fitness goals, and schedule is perfect.
A training partner can help you look forward to the gym more. They also will make you feel like going on those rainy days, since you know they are waiting.
Training with different people will expose you to different routines. You'll try exercises and machines you may not have used, allowing you to challenge your body in different ways.
If you've always had a training partner and you still feel bored? Try going it alone. Some people are better when they have no distractions, like conversation. Your concentration will be on your workout, and a certain amount of single mindedness is good in the gym.
A MP3 player can do wonders, even if it's not on. People won't try to talk to you if they think you can't hear them.
Maybe you just need a change of pace. You'd be amazed how many people do the same routines in the gym every day.
Talk about boring.
A change in workout routine can make you feel better, and help you to get into better shape. If you train in a gym, try going outside. If you train in the morning, try afternoon or evening.
Use different machines or change the number of repetitions. Take shorter, or longer breaks between sets -- anything to break up the rut your body had fallen in.
If worse comes to worse and you can't get re-motivated, then take a week or two off. Your body may be trying to tell you it needs a break. Go home, eat your favorite food, put your feet up and don't think about working out.
While working out is an excellent de-stressor, too much can have the same effect as working your job seven days a week. Burnout.
Remember you don't heal and grow in the gym. You do that at home while you're resting. Feel free to rest. You'll look better for doing it.
So add or subtract a trainer partner, spice up your workouts, or just plain take a break. As with everything in life, variety is what keeps things interesting.
